Friends of Project 10 Inc. annually presents the "Models of Excellence Scholarships" competition. Scholarships are awarded to those who are currently a graduating senior high school student and are currently attending a California High School (private, public, or parochial). Applications are made on January 1st each year and the competitions end in late-April.
The
scholarship program began in 1994 as a single award named in memory
of Peter Kaufman, the son of Alvin and Irene Kaufman. As time passed,
more commemorations were made, and the name was changed to the Models
of Excellence Scholarship competition.
Awards
of $1,000 and $500 are given each year to high school seniors who have
been accepted to colleges and universities.
The
presentations are made at a dinner given the last Sunday in June for
the recipients and their sponsors.
In
considering recipients, the scholarship committee looks for students,
gay or straight, who have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement
of civil rights in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.
Scholarships are funded by private donations and organizations.
Currently,
awards are being given to students attending UC Berkeley, University
of Washington, Harvard College, UCLA, Otis College of Art and Design,
UC Davis, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Ohio State
University, Grinnell College, California State University Los Angeles,
Southwest Community College, College of the Canyons, and Santa Monica
Community College.
